ZOO - the story of newsfilter

A quiet leafy window in Hackney Road (East End, London) where since February the more astute walker-by could spot a strange object balanced half way up the window.

On the right.

In front of the curtain.

What you say?

A Lucent wireless lan range extender on top of an empty Strongbow cider can balanced on a window frame?

Unlikely.

Notice that the cider can once contained dry cider. A lot of people have claimed that using empty dry cider cans may push the boundaries of the UK spectrum regulations, and under no accounts should a full, unopened can be used. Initial tests indicate draught cider can be an excellent substitute.

The little quantum microwavulatory particles flow from zoo (the name of the host that serves newsfilter.co.uk) through the window, past the trees, through the corner of a kebab shop, and about 450 metres across Hackney Road direct to groundzero.free2air.net. Groundzero has an omni-directional antenna mounted on an industrial tripod freestanding on a flat rooftop (but more about groundzero in an upcoming post).

Cats naturally gravitate towards careers in IT, and this one is no exception.

Jamie@newsfilter has established a busy scoop-based web server and it's popularity and regular readership is growing week by week.

Finally, here are some interesting live statistics of the wireless link that connects zoo to the outside world.

LIVE! ZOO Stat-O-Rama

current weekly groundzero to zoo wireless signal to noise quality [SNR]

current weekly groundzero to zoo wireless data rate [averaged 11/5.5/2/1 Mbps]

current weekly zoo bandwidth utilisation [bytes per second]

Strongbow Rules!!! Though I must protest the idea that draught is an excellent substitute. On the contrary draught is much better than canned.
